Our Annual Cleft Palate Informe was held on February 5th. We had a great turn out of IFC members, doctors, nurses and volunteers involved, and City Officials. Many thanks to all of those who help organize this presentation.

The purpose of the Informe is to report on the activities of the Cleft Palate program, supported by the IFC, for the past year. Below is a summary if the information presented:

Cleft Palate surgeries were performed in four different sessions in January, May, August and November. Doctors from Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and abroad volunteered their time to perform 49 surgeries at the Regional Hospital with an average of 12-13 surgeries per session. The doctors saw 190 patients total, 29 for first medical visits and 161 follow up visits. Problems addressed and or corrected include Cleft Palate, Cleft Lip, Nose Trauma, Cleft Nose, Mestiza Nose, Nasal Surgery sequels, Rhinoseptumplasty, Rhinoseptumplasty Desviation, Cranium facial Malformation and others. After surgery, the IFC assists patients with follow up consultations and possible referral to other specialists such as Orthodontists, Dentists, Speech Therapists and even education tutors on occasion. We have received a special request from our Speech Therapist for children’s books in Spanish. See notice on page 3 for more information if you’d like to donate books.

In the last 11 years we have performed 1,392 medical visits and 428 surgeries, a very successful program.

The IFC would like to express our sympathy to the family of

long-time member

Joyce Williamson.

Joyce passed away recently while on vacation in Hawaii.

Our condolences also go out to

daughter and son-in-law,

Joan and Mike Cummings.

We’ve done a great job collecting school supplies for our Education Program and tons of great things for our Bazaar. Now, it’s been brought to my attention that we need specific items for two other valuable programs.

Patricia Mendez has requested children’s books in Spanish, grade level 1 thru 6 from which the children in our Cleft Palate Speech Therapy Program can practice reading aloud. Spanish books for children are available at Papeleria Limon, the large super grocery stores such as Gigante, Commerical Mexicana, and Sam’s Club and at Libros, Libros, Books, Books on 31 de Octubre street, 1 block E. of McDonalds. They may also be purchased from large bookstore chains in the U.S. and Canada and brought down. Please bring your books to the IFC clubhouse for Patricia Mendez.

Secondly, Malu Gonzalez, a local business owner and associate of Vallarta’s DIF program, informed me that DIF is now providing a nighttime shelter where the homeless children of the street can find a safe place to sleep. This new facility is open every evening from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. They need donations of boys shoes for ages 6-14 years and also clothing for the same age group. Malu says that their greatest need right now is shoes. Please bring donations for this shelter to the IFC and I will arrange for the proper parties to pick them up.

HOME TOURS

Susan Austin Tel. 223-2794

Irma Willis Tel. 222-3298

As I write, we have completed 13 weeks, 26 tours, and have had 2,273 guests. Our docents are doing a great job of telling about the IFC’s many charities. In fact, one docent, George Fulton, ran into one of the people from his bus on the street and they stopped him and said they  were very impressed with the Club’s work and gave George a cheque for $150.00!

Evelyn Clark is doing a superb job filling for Susan Austin who is absent. She has been finding all the houses and preparing all the docents folders. Good job Evelyn!

Gary Thompson, of Gallery Pacifico, is graciously donating the proceeds from his Tuesday morning art walks and visits to artists studios to the IFC this year. Members: bring your houseguests and friends to Molino de Agua on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 9:30 and 11:00 am and make your reservations for the Art Walk with Irma. Its $10.00 for the tour, which Gary leads from Gallery Pacifico at 10:00 am every Tuesday.
