MEDICAL REPORT The Informe Anual will be Feb 3, 2004 at the clubhouse at 7:30 p.m.. Please come and meet the medical team….we, as a club, need to let the medical team know that we appreciate what they do and that we are interested in the program enough to attend and show our support. I will be looking for some specific help with transportation during the next Cleft Palate surgery program, which will be from Feb 4 thru Feb 6. We are in dire need of donated wheelchairs. The wheelchairs that we have are all out on very long term loans. It would be very nice if we could get some more wheelchairs and normally we need to have them with adjustable leg supports and footrests. Michael Bryant, former member presently living in California, brought us a large donation of orthopedic supplies. These have been distributed between the Regional Hospital and Dr Max Greig. We thank him for these much needed supplies. Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the Informe on Feb 3. Please visit us and take a look around at www.casatranquila-bucerias.com |
COMMUNITY SERVICE Isn't it great to be back in the warm winter winds of town? Whether you have had enough of the family or you brought them with you, we have plenty of things in the community to keep everyone busy. A small group of us visited a very special place. La Estancia Infantil gives physical and emotional care to a very special population. This is a daycare center for those infants that no one else van care for. These are babies that have syndromes, disabilities or severe brain damage. Yolanda is the head volunteer and leader of this service located in Pitillal. She has a calling for this. To care for these special-needs children full time requires above average knowledge. Some of the little ones need to be fed with tubes and others just need to be taught the same things a few extra times. While she is great with these babies, to their families she brings a bit of independence and happiness into what must be a frightening existence. She has an enormous job and does it on the so-called, " wing and a prayer" and a shoestring budget! She provides diapers and two meals a day for the kids. While that is important, I found in the time I spend with her that is not what her "calling " is. She is an angel of mercy. Yolanda and her tiny group of volunteers painstakingly get these kids up in special chairs to eat and get them down on mats for exercise. These kids get to have water therapy in a newly completed hydro tank. Jimmie Ellis has been instrumental in getting this place a great new roof that is well insulated and keeps the summer heat out-----thanks to our donations. While her program can use a few willing volunteers to help hold babies and help exercise little limbs in the whirlpool, there are more opportunities here in Vallarta--perhaps not so challenging!!!! We will be having our next cleft palate surgeries in February. We need help the Wednesday evening before, during consultations. We usually have 50 families and the kids waiting for 5 or 6 hours. They would love to be educated and entertained. It is a wonderful opportunity to make a difference. I am looking for people to put together good food/bad food posters (start collecting collage pictures now). We are continuing our dental hygiene teaching. We can use help to do it at the Cleft Palate consultations. While I am looking for those that speak Spanish--I will also accept those that think they know Spanish (like me)! I am challenging you to use your years of expertise and creativity to come up with something grand that can shape a life and mold a personality. Perhaps it may just be your eagerness to reach out, hold a hand or smile...contact me at susandavalosrn@hotmail.com

BLOOD DRIVE After much consideration, we have decided to have the Blood Drives more "spaced apart," giving the Blood Bank time to do more promotion on the importance of blood donation. The next blood drive will be the beginning of March. This is not to say there is not a desperate need for blood (the past few weeks there has been a tremendous shortage!), but it is much more difficult than anticipated to get donors to come in! Remember that blood can be donated 7 days a week from 8am til 7pm at San Javier Hospital. If each club member distributes a few posters, that will really help spread the word. Posters will be available in the Clubhouse by mid-February.
