DELIVERY OF SERVICES
TO THE COMMUNITY
Steering Committee

COMMUNITY SERVICES:
In October, the Club entered into an agreement to accept 98 desks and 136 chairs from the Rotary Club of Saratoga, California. That shipment was to be shipped to Guadalajara by truck but – as the membership knows - things change in Mexico and now we expect to receive them by a US naval vessel – currently scheduled for January 2000.

On November 28, 1999 our Vice President, Gale Hankel, was on hand to receive some 2700 pairs of new children’s shoes at the airport and to extend the Club’s appreciation to Mr. Jake Frizzell of New Westminster, British Columbia for his generous donation. They were flown Puerto Vallarta by the airline Canada 3000 - free of charge - for distribution in our Community to those youngsters most in need.  Mayra Fumerton and her teams (from the Friendship Club & the Feed the Children organization) are distributing the shoes in December. On behalf of the Club membership and of the recipients of these much needed shoes – THANK YOU Jake!

HEALTH SERVICES:
The November Cleft Palate Clinic (re-constructive surgeries) was successfully conducted under the stewardship of Patricia Mendez and her dedicated teams.

The program designed to supply indigent patients with personal needs (towel, toothbrush, tooth paste, etc.) has now begun to operate at the Regional Hospital under the stewardship of Mary Wichie. This extension of Club sponsored services at that Hospital holds great potential and we will be watching over the winter months to evaluate its longer-term viability in the Community.

The Health Group Patrocinio program (short-term medical aid) continues to have increasing demands made for its limited funds.

In November, the Club committed to fund the glass-eye replacement of a sightless white eye of a bright young Beca student.  The funds - up to 15,000 pesos – have been made available from the Club Contingency Fund. The surgery will be performed in Puerto Vallarta and those involved will charge out-of-pocket expenses only. The implant has been ordered and, dependent upon the delivery date, the operation will take place in early January.

As previously stated, the Education Group transferred some funding to the Heath Group for use in the Patrocinio program because of funding needs. The transferred money is to be used to assist a local fisherman obtain a series of four operations in Guadalajara needed to restore his sight.

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES:
In the November Newsletter Service Steering Committee Report, it was stated that the final two payments of 100 thousand pesos to the Department of Education for the construction at the Barrio Educación Primaria (Amado Nervo) would be made in November.  Due to a reduced rate of construction, primarily due to an inadequate number of workers, one payment has been delayed until late December or early January 2000.  It is now anticipated that the construction will be completed by early February, some six weeks later than originally scheduled.

In November, the Steering Committee agreed to fund the completion of two classrooms at the Las Brisas Primaria for 30 thousand pesos.  The rooms are 75% complete but private funding of the project was discontinued for economic reasons.  The Department of Education fully supports our involvement in this project.

In November, the Club committed to fund the purchase of paint at the kinder in La Cruz and fans in the kinder at El Progreso.

In November, Brian & Dawn Blevings, chairs of the Classroom Committee, returned and are currently putting in place plans for the budget of 50 thousand pesos at six or seven kindergarten and primary schools. They are also working with Iva Hankel on the Day of Kings distribution program that will take place on the last school day prior to January 6, 2000
